Class Format

Classes in the Satyananda tradition honor the capacity of the individual and incrementally introduce new poses. Classes are non-competitive. All classes emphasize safety and modifications to meet individual needs. Personal awareness is cultivated for use on and off the mat. Each class includes an initial settling relaxation, postures, breathing practices and final meditation.

Class Etiquette

The studio opens 15 minutes before class and will be locked immediately prior to the scheduled class start time. Sorry, we cannot accommodate late arrivals.

Please leave your coat and shoes in the foyer before proceeding to the 3rd floor studio. Dress in loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.  Bring your own yoga mat or borrow one from the studio. Straps, blocks and blankets are provided. It is best to practice on an empty stomach. Please limit the use of perfumes as some students are sensitive to fragrances.

Remember, a yoga studio is a sanctuary where you can practice the principles of yoga. Students are asked be open to the power of possibilities and to hold a positive intention to be in the present.

Class Descriptions

Classes may be categorized by six levels from foundation (Levels 1-3) to Intermediate (Levels 4-5) to advanced (Level 6).  Students interested in a wider variety of classes in the Satyananda tradition may explore additional classes at the Atma Center in Cleveland Heights.

Level 1

This class is recommended for beginners, those with physical limitations or injuries, or students wishing to deepen awareness by revisiting the physical, energetic and mental aspects of foundational practice. This class emphasizes the Pawanmuktasana (PMA) series of postures (asana) devoted to opening the joints, strengthening the core and releasing energy blocks in the body. This class works on developing the fundamentals of flexibility, strength and inner awareness. Basic breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation practices are also practiced.

Level 2

This class builds on practices from Level 1 and begins to introduce more classical yoga practices, including modified sun salutation. This class continues to build strength and flexibility.  Practices can be modified to accommodate student needs.

Mixed Level 1-2

This class incorporates elements of Levels 1 and 2 and is suitable for beginners and more experienced practitioners of yoga, allowing students to practice at their own pace.

Level 3

This class includes the full sun salutation series and increasingly advanced classical yoga poses.  This class requires a solid base level of fitness and is not recomended for those with serious injuries.  More advanced meditation and breathing practices are also introduced.

Private Client

Private client sessions offer more personalized instruction and are appropriate for anyone looking for a truly one-on-one experience. One-on-one sessions can be customized to individual needs. While classes are more tailored to an individual’s background and circumstances, Chestnut Hills Yoga does NOT provide yoga therapy.
